Glamourous Praise – The NRW-Forum discovered the potential of fashion photography at an early on.
»The announcement by New York International Center of Photography that the year 2009 was to be the year of fashion photography, sounded like news from the archives to the exhibition managers of the NRW-Forum Petra Wenzel and Werner Lippert.
Right from the beginning, the third show at established exhibition centre which was established in 1989, was dedicated to Peter Lindbergh. At that time, this was not really right for a museum, or to put it in the words of Joshua Holdeman, the international director of the photography department of Christies, “ fashion photography was a dirty word”. Against all assumptions of the museum experts the comprehensive Lindbergh Retrospective at the NRW-Forum was a success. Today following 30 photography exhibitions at the NRW-Forum, many of which were dedicated to fashion photography, the question in the world of museums and culture has been exhausted.
With Helmut Newton, whose exhibition cleverly morphed between fashion and erotic photography, the subject was finally settled: fashion photography also has a place in a museum.«
