NRW-Forum Düsseldorf

What's onThe cultural place to be: NRW-Forum

RhineBuzz is excited to be returning to the NRW-Forum to host the regular Stammtisch for the international community every Friday night in the bar from 8pm until midnight.

The museum generously offers you a discounted entry to the exhibit, €3.80 after 6pm on a Friday, and a free tour in English at 9pm. You are welcome to the bar even if you do not wish to visit the exhibition.
Yes, it is 30 cents more than last year, but it’s not going to the museum, you will be donating to the HOPE Foundation.

Many, many now visit regularly, taking in the tour every now and again, sometimes two or three times as the tour evolves and the exhibit becomes more familiar to both visitor and RhineBuzz. Occasionally there are interesting exchanges about the exhibit, especially as our guests come from all corners and cultures of the world. No doubt Mapplethorpe will give us plenty to talk about!
And often we simply have just a drink and a laugh.

Everyone is welcome, whether you wish to visit the museum or not.

Guided Tours Düsseldorf’s “NRW-Forum Kultur und Wirtschaft” shows changing exhibitions illustrating topical issues against specific cultural backgrounds. These include exhibitions of photography, media, fashion, communications, architecture, mobility or lifestyle.

The NRW-Forum is situated between the Rhine and the Hofgarten, Düsseldorf’s most attractive park; the “Caffè” restaurant serves modern Italian cuisine during exhibition hours, cake and coffee in the afternoon and a library of art books and cultural magazines.

The NRW-Forum is easy to reach by taxi from the airport or the central station as well as by public transport. Go to the “info” section on the NRW-Forum website to download a map of the area.

Robert Mapplethorpe – A retrospective

“some of the most shocking – and risque – images of modern photography and indeed of the history of art”

Born in 1946, Robert Mapplethorpe was one of the few artists who gained fame way beyond the boundaries of the art world. He dominated the photography scene at the end of the 20th century and opened the doors to establishing photography as a recognised art form. Mapplethorpe anchored the subject of homosexuality into mass culture and conceived a classical image of, usually, the male form that found its way into the spheres of commercial photography.
Robert Mapplethorpe died in 1989.

The NRW-Forum is showing a major retrospective of Robert Mapplethorpe’s photographs. His work was first shown in Germany in 1977 as part of documenta 6 in Kassel and then in a European solo exhibition in 1981 with German venues in Frankfurt, Hamburg and Munich. The last time Robert Mapplethorpe’s works were shown in Düsseldorf was in the exhibition ‘Mapplethorpe versus Rodin’ at the Kunsthalle in 1992.

The selection of 150 photographs encompasses everything from early polaroids to the final self-portraits from the year 1988, that depict him shortly before his death. Included are well-known, positively iconic subjects but also never, or rarely, shown before works, drawn from the collection of the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation New York.
