Holiday Workshop – Coding the Beat

for teenagers 12-16 yrs

April 7 2026 – April 9 2026
Kunstpalast, Palaststudio

Data Sonification1

What does your name, the weather or a painting sound like? Together we will find out what happens when data is translated into sound.

In this workshop, we will dive into the world of creative coding. We will not use code for maths problems, but as a tool for fun and creativity. You will be surprised at how quickly you can create your own soundscapes with Sonic Pi and suddenly hear data.

There is no right or wrong here – only your own mix.

Ann Maria1

Your coaches Ann-Maria Piho (musician, coder and computational linguist) and Markus van Well (live coder & musician) will show you how easy programming can be.

Markus van Well1

Look forward to exploring together how numbers become sounds, to experimenting directly with code and sound samples. Exchange ideas in a team and create together with others. On the last day, it's stage time: if you want, you can present your work to friends and family.

All you need is having fun to discover. No prior knowledge is necessary. We provide laptops and technology.

As part of ffabfuture, a funding initiative of the Federal Ministry for Education, Family Affaires, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth

ffabfuture is a partnership between TH Köln, Cologne City Library, Tech and Teach gGmbH and the NRW-Forum Düsseldorf/Kunstpalast. We test MINKT (Mathematics, Informatics, Natural science, Art, Technology) offerings, prepare freely accessible learning and teaching materials, link them together and aim to appeal to all genders equally.

The project aims to contribute to the creation of equal opportunities in STEM subjects.
