In Qing Dynasty China, the swordsman Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun-Fat) wishes to finally retire and start a new life. To do so, he entrusts his sword to his companion Yu Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh), with whom he shares an ill-fated and secret love. She is to deliver his sword, known as ‘Green Destiny’, to the honourable Sir Te (Sihung Lung). He agrees to act as guardian of the legendary sword, but nothing more. When the sword is stolen one evening by a masked figure, a frantic chase begins, and with it the battle for justice.
