This event series is a collaboration between the NRW-Forum and the Institute for Modern Japan at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, organised as part of the ASIA POP exhibition.
Drawing on the speaker’s personal experiences, this lecture examines pop culture in Japan between 1954 and 1972. Artefacts of popular culture across various media are presented and discussed. The diversity of the phenomena presented is held together by the theoretical tension between the familiar and the foreign.
Until 2023, Shingo Shimada held the Chair of Modern Japan with a focus on the social sciences at Heinrich Heine University, Düsseldorf. He now works as a freelance writer and photographer (www.mimai.art). He is a co-founder of the Immermann Kultur e.V. association.
