INSIDE OUT is a global art project with which JR has been giving people the opportunity to share their portraits and concerns with the world since 2011. Over the past ten years, more than 400,000 people from 138 countries have participated in the project.

The artist JR works at the intersection of photography, social engagement and contemporary art. He portrays people and communities in their everyday lives, prints the images in large format and pastes them in nearby public places - from the slums of Brazil to the streets of New York. His works draw attention to social and political issues, as in April 2022, when he unrolled the oversized portrait of five-year-old Valeriia, a Ukrainian refugee girl, in Düsseldorf's Ehrenhof with over 100 volunteers in front of the NRW Forum.

Our exhibition Wonderwalls. Art & Toys dedicates a wall to JR with numerous works, including from the series Portrait d'une Generation (2004), which deals with juvenile delinquency in the banlieues, or Face 2 Face (2007), which juxtaposes people from Israel and Palestine.

The INSIDE OUT project as part of the exhibition Wonderwalls. Art & Toys is realised thanks to the support of Stadtwerke Düsseldorf.
